Blackberry

Here is an entry from Warren's "account book" describing a kind of blackberry vine that he was apparently impressed with.

Dewberry. Blackberry.
It is a climbing blackberry the vine growing very large and may be allowed to trail over the ground or may be trained up to trellises like grapes. It is a sure annual bearer the berries being larger sweeter and superior in every way to blackberries. The fruit is borne in great quantities and is of a soft pulpy nature sugary and delicate and seems to melt in ones mouth like ice cream. The berries are very large often more then two inches in length a glossy sparkling black color. It is perfectly hardy and does not sucker from the roots but is increased from the tips like black cap raspberries. When in bloom in spring it is very ornamental indeed the flowers appearing in large quantities.

Sat. Jan. 1 & Sun. Jan. 2, 1898

Since I started this project half way through 2011, I thought I would pick up Warren's diary at the beginning of 1898 to cover what was missed. One of the interesting farming items is that the marketing of food produced on the farm appears to take place mostly in the winter which is opposite of what we see today. You will notice that every Saturday Warren is "in market". I also know from account books that I have that his daughter Sara would take orders for canned vegetables and deliver them to her customer's homes. This now called "value-adding" in the local food movement and Sara was doing this 100 years ago.

Enjoy
